Bonding - update it's failed :-(

Post by Foofy »

Just a little update on my bonding of Jinx & Posy. Still going slowly after their 2 punch ups a few weeks ago (fur flying)

I now have a partition in the run and in the cage and they are basically living together 24/7 but with the partition in place at all times. Then when the weather is fine and I have a free evening I am putting them together in my little wire pen on neutral territory i.e. the back garden I was finding on the grass Jinx is only really interested in eating the grass :)) :)) with occasional visits to see Posy!

Now I've moved the pen onto the patio so no grass to distract them, but due to Jinxs sore hocks have put some carpet mats on the floor. They are now paying more attention to each other as there is nothing else for them to do! However Jinx is being very gentle with Posy but obviously wants to be dominant as he is putting his head under hers a lot to demand a grooming but Posy will not groom him :( she justs stays still some of the time and sometimes trys to get her head under Jinxs.

I think that Jinx loves Posy and I think Posy is frightened of Jinx, as when they are in the pen together she just usually sits in the same place and won't move, it's always Jinx going up to her. She also breathes very heavy & fast when they are together, yet if I take out Jinx first she will hop around the pen sniffing and stand up on her hind legs etc to look around and just behave normally really. Does this sound like fear? she seems to be fine when they are in the run together and in the hutch together and behaves normally and doesn't seem frightened only when in with Jinx on neutral territory.

Some people just say I should just leave them together and let them get on with it but I feel this is too dangerous I have bonded a pair of rabbits 5 times before (one of them Jinx with Daisy) and on this my 6th attempt I have to say it is the strangest one yet normally there is loads of humping but not this time.

Jinx is about a year and a half old so still young and was previously bonded with Daisy who sadly is now at the Rainbow Bridge, so Jinx was used to having a wife whereas Posy is about 3-4 years old has always previously been kept on her own as a house rabbit. Guess I'll just plod on slowly

I think you're doing the right thing to take it slowly.
As Posy was kept on her own as a house rabbit then she may never have seen another rabbit, so will not be used to any rabbity communication, and she will be used to being her own boss..
Plus he's a boy bunny... so thats different for her too. In human comparison Jinx is about 18yrs-20yrs while Posy is 35yrs -40yrs, so he's a toyboy ;) :)) .
Imagine you had lived all your life on your own and never had a boyfriend before, then someone puts you to live with a rather good looking young chap who speaks Italian...you have no idea what he's saying and he's rather nice ,but he seems a bit amourous :-\ :)) so you keep your distance till you work out what he's saying. :))

I understand why Posy's a bit cagey, and I think the more she gets used to Jinx and learns " rabbit chat" so she can communicate , she will bond with him. :) The signs are good- they are clearly happy in each others company, they just have to go that final step of who will be the boss, then they will settle. :)

I did manage to take a little video last night of them but can't seem to upload it here at the moment will try later tonight.

Last night was the best bonding session yet, Jinx was grooming Posy's head for about 5 minutes that's what I caught on video :) :)
Will try them again this evening.
