vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
Have been reading Rwaf updates and updates from Alice at Windwhistle as well as a few vets on facebook I've seen links to, and my understanding is there is now a new vhd2 vaccs which prev was only licensed in europe now available at some vets in the uk as combi doesnt protect against new variant . Can anyone shed light on the vaccs what gap between this and the combi must be given rough price guide how regular it,s needed (read conflicting info!) and if there is any side affects known. Also I wonder is it just to be given in at risk areas? And if yes where is that currently deemed ? And are there any other things we as owners need to know? .. thanks to anyone with more info!

Re: vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
I don't know that much I'm afraid only that the new vaccine is available in this country now. I think it might be worth a phone call to my vets for some advice and see whether they can get or have the vaccine. Perhaps it may be like the old days where you have to have bunnies vaccinated twice a year instead of just once?
Re: vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
I rang our vets today to ask details about it and one of the vets will ring me back in the next couple of days with info and I will update on here then when I know more.

Re: vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
I have just rung my vet and he didn't know anything about the new strain of vhd2 or the new vaccine, I spoke to the practice owner and he said his practice has been sent no information about the new strain or the vaccine. He was surprised as he said usually the drug companies are very keen to sell their new drugs He is going to try and find out more information, and asked me if I could find out all the info I could. I have found out the new vaccine is called Cunivak VHD, I found this out from the RWAF.
Let you know when I also have more information

Re: vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
The initial vaccination with Cunivak VHD needs to be given in two doses, three weeks apart then annually only one dose needs to be given. These doses must not be closer than 2 weeks (either side) to the combi vaccination.
Prices are going to vary a lot between vets because the vaccine itself it very cheap but the cost of carriage to order a batch (from Germany) is about £70.. so the bigger the batch the more that can be shared out. My vets ordered 100 doses and are charging £17.60 for first rabbit and £9.20 for subsequent rabbits.
The *possible* side-effect I was warned of was that they could be a bit quieter for 24 hours....which is pretty standard vaccine after-effect. The 8 that I have had vaccinated so far haven't displayed any side-effects. That includes 4 eight year olds, one who went blind from EC about 6 months ago.

Re: vhd2 and the rhd2 vaccination
My vets phoned me back to say they can't get the new vaccine at the moment from their usual vaccine supplier, who told them that their isn't a new vaccine at the moment I suppose because it doesn't seem to be widely available in this country yet.
I've told my vets that if they can get hold of any of the vaccine that I would like all 4 of mine done. I have given them the name of the new vaccine and they are going to try and find out some more about it.

Just called my vets (Nine Lives) and they said they have some on order but not sure when it's going to come in as there have been some supply issues their supplier has told them.
